PROPERTY HISTORY
Wilson Reese Hart (1916–1997) was a true South Carolina polymath—a chemist by trade, a magician by heart, and an eccentric inventor who left an indelible mark on Pawleys Island. Known locally as a colorful and brilliant figure, he lived on a notable stretch of property off Highway 17 where he famously hosted Halloween magic shows that became a staple of mid-century community life.
Despite his penchant for the theatrical and his reputation as a “mad scientist” of sorts, Hart’s legacy was anchored by fifty years of profound professional and civic service to his community, state, and nation. His contributions were as varied as they were significant. A man of tireless intellect, Hart developed formulas for 75 commercially available products and held prestigious certificates of merit from both the U.S. Army and NASA.
For three decades, he operated a private lab in Columbia where he mentored children in the wonders of science, while also finding time to organize the South Carolina State Employees Credit Union and he led South Carolina Regional Blood Center. His leadership extended to the coast as well, where he served as president of the Georgetown County Chamber of Commerce and became a founding member of the Pawleys Island Masonic Lodge No. 409.
These achievements ultimately earned him the Order of the Palmetto, South Carolina’s highest civilian honor. Behind the accolades and the magic tricks was a man of deep humility and devotion. Hart spent his life doing for others, often downplaying the sheer scale of his accomplishments.
At the center of his world was his wife, Elva “Sis” Drake, whom he married in 1943. Their lives were so deeply intertwined that when she passed away in 1997, Hart famously remarked, “When Sis died, I died.” He followed her later that same year, leaving behind a property and a name forever woven into the mysterious and beautiful history of Pawleys Island.
